Instead, we’ve noticed that our compulsions are not random; they emerge during deep stress, challenge, or even times of joy. They always seem to be trying to help us with something.
We begin with this question: What are these addictions working so hard to protect us from or do for us? And how can we address that wound or challenge so they don’t have to?
It’s a new way of thinking about addiction—as a gift, a protector, and an honest part of us working tirelessly, often for years, to help us in the only way it knows how.
